The Heilbrunner Gartenbauverein processed 35 centners of cabbage in the "Krauthobeln".

Every year it's a very social affair.

Bad Heilbrunn – The "Krauthobeln" organized by the Horticultural Society has been an integral part of the Bad Heilbrunn calendar of events for decades.

The campaign always lasted two days, but this time it was shortened to one day.

This didn't do any harm.

As in the previous year, around 100 friends of high-quality food gathered in the fire station, almost 30 hundredweight of cabbage was sold.

"I'm pleasantly surprised," says Maria Fichtner, chairwoman of the gardening association.

The main reason for the shortening was the enormous personnel costs, "because two days were simply a long story".

The proceeds go to the association's treasury and are partly donated.

The holiday pass campaign, which the gardening association offers free of charge, is also financed with the money.

Elementary school students also helped

The cabbage shavings also attracted a wide variety of age groups on Friday.

Among the youngest were the students from Heilbrunn class 2a, who stamped for an hour.

"I don't need lunch anymore today, I've eaten enough here already," said Emil (7).

He filled his plate with the raw herb four times: "And I also have a present for my mom," he announced with a smile.

His buddy added: "It's great here." In the direction of his teacher, he asked: "Are we coming back here next year?" The children were all enthusiastic, said teacher Lea Pohl.

"Our boss asked if I would like to come here and I answered: Yes, I would."

Seniors are excited

The 85-year-old Hans Meißauer belongs to a completely different age group, but he still shares the children's enthusiasm for mashed cabbage: "The fresh cabbage simply tastes a hundred times better than the one you bought," says the chef.

“I can also put in whatever spices I want.” He has been making his own sauerkraut for 20 years.

The former mayor of Bichler, Franz Pfund, agreed: "I've never bought sauerkraut in a shop, I've always made it myself."

I'm there like a squirrel."
