A man of integrity: Eliakim the selfless was a symbol of a disappearing generation Israel today

Alikim is not just a revered figure - but a real myth. A man from the historical Mapai, from which the settlement movements emerged • There were things on which I did not agree with Elikim, but I always looked at him with admiration

Lately, the expressions "huge", "one of a kind" have been used a lot.

That's why it's hard for me to refer to the arrogant Elikim in these expressions, even though he deserves it.

In fact, he is not just a revered figure - but a real myth.

A man from the historical Mapai, from which came the movements that settle in Judea and Samaria as well.

The self-righteous Eliakim was already a man in his own country when I was born, shortly after the establishment of the state.

At that time, he founded the "Volunteer Row" with the late Prof. Yeshayahu Leibovich and others, an organization that fought against injustices in society. It was a collection of students from the right and the left, who fought against all kinds of injustices by the government. A group that demanded, for example, that public figures travel in cars are identified, so that they can be complained about if they use the vehicle not for the civil service.

Straight as a ruler, absolute yikes

In this, the stubborn Elikim stood out.

A man of spirit, straight as a ruler, an absolute yikes.

A person so different from all the crooks of the law and the winks of the eye.

By the way, this integrity caused great appreciation also from the Arabs of Hebron, and sometimes, when there was a conflict between a Jew and an Arab - the selfless was the compromiser.

He was the mediator as well as the arbiter, because the Arabs trusted him and appreciated his integrity.

Although they also knew that he was the complete Land of Israel, they knew that he would not deviate from the truth as a whole.

This is also the reason why, when we established the Yesha Council, we asked the late Hanan Porat and Malik Atzani to join us.

The Yesha council was made up of the heads of the councils, people of action. We also wanted people of spirit, who would lift the council a little and give it another touch, and Atzani was indeed one of the designers of the council at that time. By the way, even then, he never moved from his truth as a whole. For example , Eliakim went on a hunger strike with us on Shabbat that lasted 40 days, and we told him that on Shabbat it is permissible to eat an olive, in honor of Shabbat. I admit that we ate a little more than an olive, we expanded the concept a bit. But not Eliakim. He checked exactly how much olive it was, and was not willing to eat a crumb more .He never cheated.

In conclusion, it should be said - there were things on which I did not agree with Elikim, but I always looked at him with admiration.

It was fun to work with him, because you knew there was no hidden meaning or other interest in his words.

He was honest as a level and completely free of hidden interests.

Today it is hard to even imagine a person who does not have hidden interests, or a person who follows his words without even trying to change something.

But it was Elikim stubborn.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
