Damascus-SANA

Dr. Tamar Yared, ENT specialist and surgeon, documented a case of non-typical fibrous hemangioma that had not been previously recorded in Syria, while only six cases of this type were recorded around the world.

The rare case, which was diagnosed in a six-year-old child at Al-Mouwasat University Hospital in Damascus, was documented in a research article published in the internationally-reviewed Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and on the European, German and International Spring platform, to which a number of specialized medical research journals are affiliated.

The article included the stages of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up in the hospital, as it was prepared by Dr. Yared under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Mustafa, a specialist in otolaryngology, ear and head surgery and a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University.

Dr. Yared explained in a statement to SANA that the case is rare, as it is located outside the nasopharynx, and it was diagnosed in a 6-year-old child who attended the ear clinic at Al-Mowasat University Hospital in August last year, complaining of a one-sided nasal obstruction with intermittent snoring and epistaxis that gradually increased in severity without any previous history. pharmacological or pharmacological.

After clinical evaluation and radiological investigations, the decision was taken according to the specialist, that surgical management should be under general anesthesia, specific endoscopic surgery and tumor removal with control of bleeding by electrocoagulation. The results of the histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of fibrous hemangioma at the expense of the nasal pace, and no recurrence was observed after a year of surgery.

Dr. Yared indicated that it is histological, and this tumor is similar to fibrous hemangioma located in the nasopharynx, which is a common condition that usually affects males only in adolescence due to hormonal reasons, but it differs from it clinically and epidemiologically, stressing that because of the differences, this clinical case presents a challenge in diagnosis and requires careful evaluation and suspicion. High in its presence to enable access to the correct diagnosis and management.

For his part, the supervisor of the case and research, Dr. Ahmed Mostafa, stressed the importance of the research because it documented a rare case, as only a few hundred cases of atypical fibrous hemangioma were previously recorded in the medical literature, located in different anatomical locations, including on the maxillary sinus and on the conjunctiva of the eye, with mention of only six cases that arose at the expense of nasal tempo.

Dr. Mustafa referred to publishing houses and documenting the rare case by raising the scientific classification of the University of Damascus and the Syrian medical institutions on the one hand, and introducing the scientific activity of doctors on the other hand.

Dr. Mustafa explained that conducting research studies and studying rare cases that need diagnosis and a qualitative treatment measure with resident doctors, graduate students and specialists is a large part of the work of the university and university hospitals with the aim of introducing doctors to these rare cases.

Dr. Mustafa pointed out that rare cases are presented in scientific conferences to encourage young doctors to do scientific research, and publishing in an international scientific journal gives an added value to these researches and is known for the effort of medical staff.
