ACSAD started a training course in the field of optimal horticultural agricultural operations for date palm for fifteen trainees from the Plant Production Directorate in the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, at the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Areas and Arid Lands (ACSD).
The course, which was inaugurated in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Eng. Mohamed Hassan Qatna, and the Director General of ACSAD, Dr. Nasr El-Din El-Obeid, came in implementation of the framework scientific cooperation agreement between the two sides, with the aim of developing the expertise, knowledge and skills of the trainees in the correct application of ground and vertical palm tree service operations and traditional and modern palm propagation methods by tissue cultivation and orchard establishment Modern, good agricultural practices, date harvesting and post-harvest transactions.
The course aims to review the preparation of a project to expand palm cultivation in the Syrian Badia, Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra, in order to direct agricultural investments in this field.
Al-Obeid explained that the course comes in implementation of the pioneering role in which ACSAD plays in the development and development of palm cultivation in the Arab region, explaining that the center has contributed to conducting many studies in Syria, including an analytical study of agricultural systems, an assessment of the economic and social repercussions of the obstacles facing palm trees in Syria, and the selection of 10 palm strains. Al-Obaid pointed out that ACSAD contributed to the project to develop vertical and ground palm orchards service operations to increase production and improve quality, which was implemented in 11 Arab countries, including Syria, during the period from 2016 to 2020, to increase production and improve the quality of fruits compared to the production of orchards that are provided with traditional services.
The course lasts for three days, during which a group of ACSAD experts will present lectures on various theoretical and applied topics centered on palm propagation by traditional and modern methods, establishing orchards, palm head service operations, optimal ground fertilization, foliar fertilization, the most important pests and major insects for palms, integrated management of the red palm weevil, improving irrigation efficiency and foliar fertilization.
