Niamey-Sana
The authorities in Niger announced today that floods caused by heavy rains have killed 159 people in one of the wettest seasons in the country.
AFP quoted the official toll as saying: 121 people were killed by the collapse of their homes and 38 others drowned this year, and the floods damaged tens of thousands of homes in addition to schools, medical centers, grain stores and livestock, in addition to affecting about 225,000 people and injuring about 200 others.
In turn, the meteorologist in Niger warned that heavy rains will continue until the end of this month.
The annual rainy season in this African country is often in the Sahel between June and August or September, but in recent years the intensity of rainfall has increased, which has led to an acceleration of the risk of deadly floods, especially in slums.
At least 50 people died on the 15th of this month and 120,000 others were displaced as a result of the floods caused by torrential rains that have continued in Niger for three months.
