China confirmed that the statement made by US President Joe Biden regarding his country's readiness to "defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion" constitutes a serious violation of Washington's declared policy on the island.
"This is a serious violation of an important commitment made by the United States not to support 'Taiwan independence', and thus it sends a wrong and dangerous message to the separatist forces operating there," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told AFP.
"We are ready to make every possible sincere effort to seek conditions for peaceful reunification, and at the same time we will never accept any activities aimed at dividing the country, and we reserve the option to take all necessary measures," Mao added.
"We urge the US side to recognize the utmost importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan question, and to sincerely abide by the pledge made by US leaders not to support Taiwan independence," she said.
