"It's not a conflict, it's violence": Women's rights groups in France are outraged at the way a case of domestic violence is handled and the political reactions to it.
At the center of the case are Adrien Quatennens, MP for the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, and his wife Céline.
As the "Guardian" reports, the public prosecutor's office in Lille is investigating a police report by the woman against the politician.
Now Quatennens has gone public himself.
On Sunday he announced that he did not know what the ad contained, but that his wife wanted the couple's disputes to be documented.
You want a divorce.
Then the sentences follow, which now evoke outraged reactions - not only because of their content, but also because of the reaction of LFI representatives to it.
Quatennens admitted to grabbing his wife's wrist during the argument and taking her phone away.
When trying to take it back, Celine jumped on his back.
When he ran away, she hit her elbow.
In a previous argument, he had hit her "in a context of extreme tension and mutual aggression."
He deeply regrets this and has apologized many times.
Allegations against media, police and social networks
For Jean-Luc Mélenchon, LFI candidate in the last presidential election, the matter is apparently settled.
According to the Guardian, he praised Quatennens' "dignity and courage."
At the same time, he allegedly scolded voyeuristic media, the police and social networks for interfering in private affairs.
Mélenchon is not alone in this opinion.
MP Sophia Chikirou praised Quatennen's "honesty and sacrifice."
Anne-Cécile Mailfert, head of the women's rights organization Fondation des Femmes, wrote that Mélenchon needs to be better informed about domestic violence.
Green MP Sandrine Rousseau suggested that Quatennens refrain from public appearances in the future.
"Violence against women has many faces, none of which is acceptable." Meanwhile, the LFI announced that it was permanently involved in the fight against violence against women.
The 32-year-old politician announced that he would retire from his party post.
He wanted to protect the political movement and its activists.
