The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation announced the cancellation of more than 2,400 flights in Europe last Friday due to the strike of French air traffic controllers at French airports.
AFP quoted the director of the organization, Eamon Brannan, as saying in a statement today: "More than 2,400 flights were canceled during this social movement, while there were significant delays on other flights of 45 minutes for each flight flying over French territory," noting that 28,967 flights were operated. Last Friday, compared to 31,450 flights the day before and throughout the week, the daily average was 29,438 flights per day, a decrease of 2.2 percent compared to the previous week, again as a result of the strike.
For its part, the French Directorate General of Civil Aviation asked companies to cancel half of their Friday flight programs as a precaution, i.e. about 1,000 flights leaving or arriving in French territory.
Ryanair, the first in Europe, had indicated that 420 flights flying mainly over France, without necessarily landing there, were canceled and condemned the "unjustified" move.
The strike of air traffic controllers at French airports last Friday, to demand a response to inflation in the country, led to disruption of air traffic in Europe, the cancellation of a thousand flights and the delay of other flights longer than usual.
