The Minister of Education will submit to the Higher Education Council for approval the establishment of a professional committee that will examine the opening of the 11th university in Israel.

Education Minister Yifat Shasha Biton will propose to the Council for Higher Education (MLA) the establishment of a professional committee for the establishment of a university in the Galilee. The members of the MLA, headed by the minister, will discuss the proposal at the upcoming meeting to be held after the holidays and are expected to give the green light to the move.
A significant step such as establishing a new university in addition to the ten that exist in Israel becomes more complex in a transitional government.
The Legal Adviser to the Government approved to raise the issue at the meeting since it is not yet a final approval for the establishment of the university, but an additional step on the way there.
The establishment of the university itself is not expected to be implemented during the tenure of the current government.
At this stage, the amounts required for this will not be discussed, so the proposal should not tie the hands of the next government.

Shasha Biton wishes to confirm the conclusions of the committee that dealt with the issue, which was established last year at her request and resumed its activities five months ago.
The committee was chaired by the former chairman of the National Science Foundation, Prof. Benny Geiger from the Weizmann Institute. The committee was asked to draw up an outline for the establishment of the University of the Galilee which, among other things, concerns the academic, planning and budgetary aspects of the establishment of the university, which has been discussed a lot over the years, and to submit its recommendations to the Legislature and the committee for planning and budgeting (VAT). The main option that is on the agenda is the establishment of the university on the basis of Tel Hai College, possibly in collaboration with other institutions from the region.
"A university in the Galilee is a national goal that has been talked about a lot, and we are working with all our might to achieve it," the minister said at the time. "Establishing a university in the Galilee will be a real change in the rules of the game in the development of the Galilee, will serve as an anchor for the entire region and will help strengthen and make higher education more accessible.
The north and the south in Israel will be promoted in our watch with actions, not just words."
