The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, announced today the death of cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, at the age of 80.
"Polyakov's research helped prove that the human body is ready for space flights, not only to near-Earth orbits, but also to deep space," said a statement published by the foundation, expressing its condolences to the family of the deceased.
Polyakov worked as a pilot and cosmonaut in the Soviet era.. Between 1994 and 1995, he spent about 437 days and 18 hours in the Soviet Mir space station, setting a record for the longest stay in space in a single flight.
