Young graduates seem to be benefiting from the favorable labor market situation, at least in terms of remuneration.

Their median gross salary per year has increased slightly, by 1%, over the past two years, according to a WTW study published on Monday.

In 2022, it amounts to 39,000 euros for a bac+4/bac+5 profile, with less than two years of experience, compared to 38,500 euros in 2020.

"

It is clear that French companies remain particularly attached to the reputation and ranking of training schools for their young employees when allocating salaries

", also notes the study by the consulting firm, which is based on a of data from more than 5,500 young people hired within a panel of 44 companies.

Indeed, young graduates from the most prestigious business and engineering schools (HEC, Essec, ESCP, Polytechnique, Télécom Paris, CentraleSupélec, etc.) earn 43,000 euros in their first year.

That is between 3000 and 5000 euros more than graduates from less renowned schools.

The median salary of young university graduates is 39,500 euros.

Better paid Parisians

The study also highlights the differences in remuneration according to geographical areas.

Young Parisian graduates earn on average 5% more than their counterparts with a bac+4/bac+5 profile in the regions.

This is less than in 2020, when the salary difference amounted to 7%.

The Covid-19 crisis, which has seen the use of telework grow, has enabled part of the population based in the regions to benefit from the salaries practiced in Ile-de-France

”, estimate the authors of the study.

The level of diploma within the higher education also obviously has an impact on the salary upon leaving.

If young graduates with bac+4 or bac+5 from engineering, business or university schools earn an average of 39,000 euros, it is much less for holders of a BTS or a DUT ( 29,500 euros) or a license (35,000 euros).

Holders of a doctorate or a thesis receive on average more or less the same salary as the bac+4/bac+5 (39,500 euros).

On the other hand, those who have an MBA, an MEB or who have completed dual training are paid an average of 42,000 euros per year.

WTW explains this increase in entry-level salaries for young graduates in the context of the “

war for talent

”.

It “

has destabilized and shaken up companies that have to adapt.

Remuneration remains a strong lever of attractiveness and retention for these new generations, who have revised their salary expectations upwards

”, points out Radia Rafil, consultant within WTW, quoted in the study.
