The heiress of the kings Guillermo and Máxima, 18, begins to lavish herself in official acts as preparation for her future on the throne

Amalia de Orange, future queen of the Netherlands, accompanied her parents, Guillermo and Máxima, for the first time on Tuesday at the opening of the parliamentary year (Prinsjesdag, in Dutch).

The Dutch princess turned 18 in December 2021, and although she does not yet represent her parents in her own official acts, she is making herself known to her compatriots on designated dates.

In this case, it is the Speech of the Crown, where the monarch presents the Government's plans for the current legislature.

It is one of its most important functions from a constitutional point of view, and after two years of the pandemic, the traditional carriage ride through the streets of The Hague, seat of Congress and the Senate, has been recovered.

Princess Amalia has also made her debut on this tour dressed in a gala dress.

On a sunny day and with an abundant public gathered in the streets, the kings and their daughter have been applauded, although the protests of the farmers have also been heard loudly among the cheers.

They have been complaining for months that they are identified as the main cause of nitrogen pollution, due to their livestock farms, and several groups have come to The Hague to show their anger before the kings.

They did so as the Crystal Carriage passed by, used by sovereigns to move from Noordeinde Palace —King William's workplace— to the city's Royal Theatre.

For this ceremony, the so-called Golden Carriage was traditionally used, but the carriage has a problem: it is decorated with colonial motifs, and today it is a contested symbol of the monarchy.

Therefore, once restored,

Amalia de Orange prepares for adult life: she starts university and will accompany the Dutch king and queen on an official trip

This weekend, the newspaper

De Telegraaf,

the one with the largest circulation in the country, pointed out that security measures had been reinforced around the young princess and the prime minister, Mark Rutte, because "there were references to both in encrypted messages from the organized crime about an alleged attack or kidnapping”.

For this reason, "Amalia does not reside, at the moment, in her student flat in Amsterdam," according to the newspaper.

The information service of the Government and the Prosecutor's Office declined to comment then, and they do not explain now if additional measures have been adopted for this Prinsjesdag.

The ceremony took place in the theater due to the restoration works of the Sala de los Caballeros, located in the Parliament grounds, and the usual venue for the event.

Dressed in green and with a golden turban, Princess Amalia has waved somewhat shyly from the carriage.

She was sitting across from her parents, and she was already wearing pieces from the royal jewelry box.

In this case, an emerald necklace and matching earrings.

Her mother has chosen a gray dress with a sort of superimposed stole of the same fabric.

Her husband wore a morning suit, the highest etiquette suit for daytime ceremonies.

Once inside the theater, the young woman sat in the front row next to her uncles, the princes Constantine - brother of King William - and Laurentien.

Until the sixties, the heiress accompanied her parents on a throne placed next to that of the crown holders.

It no longer happens, and she has followed the speech along with the rest of the politicians present.

In her words,

the king has pointed out how "painful it is that so many people have problems paying their bills".

On behalf of the Executive, he has also underlined the contradiction that "at a time of economic growth and with little unemployment, there are people in a hurry and poverty increases".

Princess Amalia, who is studying an interdisciplinary degree in Politics, Economics, Law and Psychology, already has a seat, without a vote, in the Council of State.

This September, she attended her first official banquet at her headquarters.

And in 2023, she will join her parents for the first time on an official visit to Curaçao, Aruba and Saint Martin, in the Caribbean Sea, which are countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Crown's Speech coincided with the publication of a survey on public trust in Dutch politicians.

Commissioned by public television (NOS), it indicates, among other things, that the current center-right Cabinet receives a rating of 4.2 out of 10 from voters.

On the other hand, 7 out of ten have “little or very little confidence” in Dutch politics.

Prepared by the firm Ipsos, 1,993 people have been asked.
