The broadcasts of Elizabeth II's funeral were apparently too much for Christian Lindner.
The FDP Finance Minister is now demanding consequences.
Berlin - After the salaries of the directors of public broadcasting, Finance Minister Christian Lindner has now commented on the broadcasting fee.
The FDP leader believes that the fees should be capped.
"The fact that ARD, ZDF and Phoenix are broadcasting live and in parallel from the Queen's funeral from London and each have their own staff in London clearly shows that there is considerable potential for savings," Lindner told the
Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ)
on September 20.
Broadcast contribution, Queen reporting and FDP boss: criticism from Lindner
A suspension of fee increases would relieve people "at a time of rapidly rising prices".
At the same time, it would serve as an incentive for public broadcasters to downsize and focus on their core mission, added Lindner.
"I'm sure that large sums of money can be saved through cooperation without this having a negative impact on the program." Lindner had recently called for a salary cap for top personnel in public broadcasting.
Allegations against ex-director Schlesinger: the public prosecutor is investigating
Public broadcasting had come under criticism because of the events at Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb).
Former director Patricia Schlesinger resigned in August and was dismissed without notice after numerous allegations of nepotism were made against her.
Meanwhile, the public prosecutor's office is also investigating.
In a commentary on the Schlesinger case, Münchner Merkur
editor-in-chief Georg Anastasiadis recalled that the broadcasters must remain the guarantors of high-quality journalism.
