Iranian dissidents and former prisoners in Iran, including an Australian-British academic, announced Tuesday, September 20 in New York the filing of a civil complaint against Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, expected Wednesday at the General Assembly of the UN, for its role as judge in Iran in the 1980s, when thousands of people were sentenced to death there, according to the National Union for Democracy in Iran (Nufdi).

“In total, I spent 12 months in solitary confinement out of the two years and three months I was imprisoned in Iran.

I was subjected to a whole series of psychological and physical tortures and regularly subjected to cruel, degrading and humiliating mistreatment”

, affirmed, in a video released during a press conference in New York, Kylie Moore-Gilbert , an Australian-British academic imprisoned in Iran from September 2018 to November 2020 for espionage.

"This action is a step towards justice and an attempt to help the victims regain their dignity"

, added a former political prisoner, Navid Mohebbi, member of Nufdi, during this press briefing.

The civil complaint invokes US legislation on the protection of victims of torture.

Nufdi's political director, Cameron Khansarinia, welcomed that

“the plaintiffs in this case, Iranian dissidents, former Iranian hostages, former Western hostages, are brought together”

.

According to him, it

“echoes the cries we hear today in the streets of Iran:

'Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, we are all together.'

President Raisi, elected in August 2021, is due to speak on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly.

He met his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in New York on Tuesday, who said he had spoken with him about Tehran's nuclear program and

"respect for women's rights"

after demonstrations in several cities across the country.
