Hurricane Fiona slammed into the Turks and Caicos Islands today as a Category 3 storm, threatening to devastate the tiny Caribbean archipelago after wreaking havoc on its path across the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Reuters quoted the National Hurricane Center as saying, "The Turks and Caicos Islands are experiencing heavy rain and flooding as a result of the hurricane, which reached off the shore of the largest island in the archipelago."
Storm warnings were issued for the southeastern Bahamas, with concern growing that the hurricane could reach Bermuda.
In turn, Richard Bash of the National Hurricane Center said that "Fiona", the first major hurricane this season, is expected to increase in strength to Category 4 in the coming days.
Hurricane Fiona killed at least three people, including two in Puerto Rico and one in Guadeloupe, earlier this week.
Residents crowded into shelters after the typhoon and several governments issued travel warnings to the islands, which are popular tourist destinations.
Fiona heads to the eastern Bahamas on Wednesday, where it could reach the strength of a Category 4 storm.
These storms come five years after the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria, which resulted in the worst blackout in US history and killed 3,000 people.
