The head of the Kherson region Vladimir Saldo announced the administration's approval of holding a popular referendum on the accession of the Kherson region to Russia.
Sputnik quoted Saldo as saying in a statement today: "After the referendum on the province's accession to Russia, he will go to Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to legally approve the results of expressing the popular will as soon as possible."
The Kherson Provincial General Council had appealed to the region's president, Vladimir Saldo, to take an initiative to organize an immediate popular referendum on joining Russia based on broad popular demands from the population of the province.
It is noteworthy that on May 25, the Russian President signed a decree allowing to facilitate the procedures for obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
