The Chairman of the People's Assembly of the Lugansk People's Republic Denis Miroshnichenko announced that President Leonid Pasechnik today signed a law on holding a referendum in the country on joining Russia.
Sputnik quoted Miroshchenko as saying in a statement: The Council decided to hold a referendum on joining Russia from 23 to 27 September.
Yesterday, the General Council of the Republic appealed to President Pasechnik for an immediate referendum to recognize the republic as part of the Russian Federation.
For his part, the President of the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, announced that the popular referendum on the accession of the republic to Russia will take place in the same period set by the Lugansk Republic.
Pushilin said: Donbass returns to its homeland. I think the bill came at the right time, adding: I ask the deputies for support after setting the dates for the referendum.
Yesterday, the head of the Donetsk People's Republic's Public Chamber, Alexander Kaufman, announced that the Chamber had submitted a request to the country's president in order to immediately organize a popular poll to join Russia.
It is noteworthy that yesterday Pushilin published a video clip showing him having a conversation with Pasechnik, where he requested joint preparation and coordination for holding a referendum in the two republics to join the Russian Federation.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed two decrees stipulating Russia's recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics.
