Palestinian effort to prevent civil war Israel today

On the eve of Abu Mazen's speech at the United Nations: Riots in Nablus following an arrest made by the Palestinian security forces • Authority officials: "We do not want a fratricidal war" • Criticism on the Palestinian street towards the Authority and a demand to investigate the death of Firas Yaish, who was not involved in the clashes

The violent protest that erupted in Nablus following the arrest of Masaab Eshetia, a member of Hamas, by the Palestinian security forces did not surprise local commentators, who warned in recent weeks of possible entanglement by the Palestinian Authority, which is between the Israeli hammer and the anvil of the people on the street.

"Israel accused the PA of losing control and pressured it to act, and because of all this pressure, the PA made a mistake and embroiled itself in front of the Palestinian people who now look at it as a hostile body. Instead of protecting its people, it goes against them," they say in the territories.

"Even the ordinary Palestinian resident, who until now did not exactly understand what security coordination meant, received in this incident clear proof that the Authority works for Israel. The manner of Masab's arrest, the timing, and everything that happened show that the Authority adopted Israel's methods of operation: the foiled security personnel conducted a planned ambush at night To Masab while driving the car along with two others who were with him, it reminds of the assassination attempts that the Israelis make."

The timing of the arrest follows an Israeli demand from the PA to start operating in the field.

The fact that this is a wanted by Israel caused a lot of anger in the streets of Nablus.

For many hours, the Palestinian security forces tried to calm the angry crowd.

Armored jeeps patrolled the city and were pelted with stones.

The clashes subsided only in the wee hours, but in Nablus they say that the calm is temporary and that it is only a matter of time before tensions erupt again.

What increased the intensity of the protest was the death of Firas Yaish, 53, a resident of Nablus, one of the oldest families in the city, uninvolved, who was killed during the riots.

In Palestinian Street, they blamed the PA for the death of an innocent resident, and called for an end to security coordination with Israel.

"When non-involved people are killed by non-Israeli army fire, it is more serious. No one wants a fratricidal war, we already have enough problems. We must not fight each other, Israel is the enemy and we must direct the fire at it, but the people will not accept what the PA is doing ", they say in the territories.

The Palestinian security system rushed to convene all the factors to assess the situation in which they discussed ways to contain the events to prevent deterioration.

Mechanisms denied the claims that Ya'ish was killed by Palestinian security personnel.

The spokesman, Talal Davikhat, said in an attempt to imply that Ya'ish was killed by armed fire: "There was no presence of security personnel in the area where the resident was killed. He died as a result of an injury that has not yet been determined. We are waiting for the medical report, and there are testimonies from the field that confirm this."

Regarding the wanted woman, it was stated in the message that "the arrest was due to reasons that will be revealed later."

The announcement also included a call for unity among the Palestinian public, "We should not be dragged along by the agendas of our neighbors," it said.

Similar messages came from the office of the PA chairman, Abu Mazen, in order to calm the stormy winds. "We ask the people to unite at this dangerous stage in which the Palestinian issue is.

We emphasize the sanctity of Palestinian blood and the need to maintain order and security in the street and to behave responsibly."

The Palestinian Authority is trying to show that they have not completely lost control of the territory.

The arrest in Nablus came on the eve of PA Chairman Abu Mazen's speech at the UN General Assembly in two days, in a message intended to signal to the international community that Ramallah is taking steps in the fight against terrorism.

"He wants to strengthen his status, to show the world that he is against terrorism and also pays a price for it," according to a Palestinian commentator.
