Put under pressure by the advance of the Ukrainian forces, Vladimir Putin decided to play the escalation.
Referendums on joining the Russian Federation will take place from the end of this week, on September 23, and until the 27th, in several separatist territories of Donbass, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, in the east and south from Ukraine.
An initiative that could lead to a major turning point in the conflict launched nearly seven months ago by the head of the Kremlin.
These referendums, the outcome of which is not in doubt, were announced on Tuesday by the pro-Russian authorities in these regions.
But the initiative appears unequivocally guided from Moscow.
In Donetsk, the "capital" of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), voters will have to decide on the question:
"Do you approve of the entry of the DNR into Russia as a subject of the Federation?"
The ballots should be worded in the same way in the other regions.
