King Abdullah of Jordan warned today (Tuesday) on the stage of the United Nations that "pursuing the status quo in Jerusalem will increase tensions" and claimed, "Christians in Jerusalem are in danger." He said these words at the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, about two hours before his meeting with Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
In his speech at the UN he said, "War or diplomacy did not solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The people themselves, not politicians, must push their leaders to resolve the conflict.
What would the world look like if this conflict had already been resolved?
How many generations of young people could have grown up with the optimism of peace and progress?", he wondered.
He expressed his support for the two-state solution and claimed, "The Palestinian people cannot remain without realizing the right of self-determination."
He emphasized, "The future of Jerusalem is of urgent concern. Striving for the status quo in Jerusalem will increase tensions, the holy city should not be a place of hatred."
He read, "Jordan is obligated to protect the historical status quo in the city and the position of the Christians in Jerusalem. The Christians in Jerusalem are in danger. This cannot continue."

The meeting between Lapid and the King will take place a few days before Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' speech at the United Nations. In Israel, they are concerned that Abbas's speech will be extremely harsh and will further increase tensions in the field. In recent weeks, Israel has been working with Jordan to pressure Abbas to activate the Palestinian security forces in the north the West Bank and curb the escalation.
The meeting will take place before the Tishrei holidays, during which there is a potential for tensions on the Temple Mount - an issue that greatly worries the Jordanians. In recent weeks, the Jordanians pressured Palestinian President Abbas not to advance a vote in the UN Security Council to accept Palestine as a full member state of the UN.
