The Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip gathered today (Tuesday) for an emergency meeting, following the overnight arrest of a senior Hamas official in Nablus, Mesab Shteyeh, by the Palestinian Authority.

The factions called on the authority to release the terrorist operative, and to recognize the young man who was killed in the riots in Nablus.

At the same time, the PA called for calm while objects were thrown at the vehicles of the Palestinian security forces.

"Our people must unite and unify ranks at this stage, where the national issue is," the authority said.

"The sanctity of the Palestinian blood and the need to maintain order and security in the street must be preserved, and be used responsibly since the original campaign is against the occupation and the liberation of Jerusalem and the holy places of Islam and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state."

Tonight, the security forces of the Palestinian Authority arrested the senior Hamas official, armed men took to the streets and an exchange of fire developed on the spot.

Following the arrest, terrorist activists in Jenin called on the Palestinian Authority to stop the "pursuit of the resistance", and threatened to kidnap members of the Palestinian security apparatus.

"We don't want you to fight us, but to take your hands off us and release Mosab," the activists said.

"If you kidnap people, we will do the same. How can we move while you coordinate with the occupation? You don't give a chance and limit the fighters."

Last week, Prime Minister Yair Lapid urged the Palestinian Authority to curb terrorist operatives in its territory.

"The State of Israel will continue to stop and thwart terrorist activities and terrorists in the field. We expect the Authority to take responsibility and fight terrorism," said Lapid.
