Santo Domingo/San Juan - Hurricane "Fiona" is wreaking havoc in Central America, leaving a trail of devastation through the countries of Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The tropical storm had gained strength over the Atlantic over the weekend and was upgraded to a hurricane en route to Puerto Rico.

"Fiona" raged there more violently than the devastating hurricane "Maria" in 2017, explained Governor Pedro Pierluisi.

According to the authorities, a total of 800,000 people were cut off from the drinking water supply due to the damage caused by "Fiona".

Shortly thereafter, hurricane "Fiona" moved further west towards the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean state at least one person died as a result, further fatalities are feared.

More than 12,000 people have been forced to leave their homes, said General Juan Méndez García, Director of the Center for Rescue Services.

The storm also caused numerous flooded streets and power outages.

According to the US Hurricane Center (NHC), while tropical storm "Fiona" swept across the Dominican Republic, it had wind speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour.
