During his speech to the UN General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron brushed aside many topics, devoting all

This Tuesday, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron spoke before the General Assembly of the UN.

From the war in Ukraine, to which he logically devoted long minutes, to solidarity with the poorest countries, the President of the Republic addressed many subjects.

On the war in Ukraine

The Head of State first of all mentioned the war in Ukraine, which began on February 24.

According to him, “Russia has decided, in doing so, to open the way to other wars of annexation, in Africa, Asia or Latin America”.

“Who is hegemonic today if not Russia?

asked the head of state.

After castigating the fact that "Russia flouts the principles at the heart of our organization" by continuing the war in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron denounced "a return to the age of imperialism and colonies".

"Those who are silent today serve in spite of themselves, or secretly with a certain complicity, the cause of a new imperialism, of a contemporary cynicism which disintegrates our international order without which peace is not possible", further lamented Emanuel Macron.

The President of the Republic nevertheless defended his course of action consisting of maintaining dialogue with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, in the name of the “search for peace”.

On the Russian referendums

“We know that an agreement will only succeed if the sovereignty of Ukraine is preserved”, hammered the French president, regretting the “simulacra of referendums” which are looming in the coming days in the separatist regions, assuring that they have “no legal existence” and will not be recognized by the international community.

“It's not about choosing a side: it's the responsibility of all those who are committed to upholding the charter and our most precious asset, peace.

On the climate challenge

Emmanuel Macron also spoke about climate change, citing in particular the dramatic example of the floods in Pakistan.

“We must do everything so that this new division of the world does not happen.

Our challenges are more and more numerous and urgent and require new cooperation,” he warns, adding: “We cannot ask the same of sub-Saharan Africa and the big (carbon) emitters.

On helping the poorest countries

The French Head of State returned to the food aid planned for countries suffering from the consequences of the war in Ukraine: “France will finance the evacuation of Ukrainian wheat to Somalia, in conjunction with the global food partnership.

“Finally, Emmanuel Macron spoke about the global health situation: “On health, we must learn from the pandemic (of Covid-19).

(…) The pandemic has further increased inequalities.

»

Emmanuel Macron insisted on the fact that constant solidarity was needed on all the subjects raised during his speech: “On all these subjects, it is partnerships between the North and the South that must be developed.

All this is the reverse of a division that some want to install.

Faced with all these challenges, we must show more solidarity, but in no case give in to sirens that lead nowhere.
