With the aim of raising the level of drinking water services in Damascus and its countryside, the General Corporation for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Damascus and its countryside held today a workshop on the projects included in the Corporation’s plan for the year 2022-2023, with the participation of a number of international organizations working in Syria, at the Dummar Pumping Center.
The axes of the workshop focused on the importance of participatory work with international organizations in order to rehabilitate drinking water systems, ensure the safety of their sources and deliver them to citizens' homes, and discuss ways to overcome the difficulties and challenges facing the Foundation's work in this context by setting plans and setting priorities.
The Assistant Minister of Water Resources for Strategic Affairs, Eng. Jihad Kanaan, pointed out the importance of the workshop to determine priorities and start work effectively, pointing to the positive role of the coordination process between the ministry and international donors regarding the advancement of the drinking water services sector.
In turn, Engineer Osama al-Akhras, advisor to the Minister of Water Resources, indicated that the ministry has taken a series of steps in cooperation with the Damascus Water Corporation to rehabilitate drinking water systems and overcome obstacles to deliver potable water to citizens' homes, pointing out the importance of the workshop in order to enhance cooperation with international organizations and focus on supplying wells with energy alternative in order to achieve sustainability and rehabilitate damaged reservoirs in the areas of Damascus countryside, indicating the ministry's readiness to provide all necessary facilities in this regard.
The Director-General of the General Corporation for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Damascus Governorate, Issam Al-Tabbaa, stressed the importance of participatory work between the Corporation and international organizations and its positive repercussions on providing drinking water services to all citizens in the areas of Damascus and its countryside, indicating that the Corporation focuses on a number of service and development goals for the coming period despite the challenges facing it. Its work under the current conditions and the damage to the drinking water networks and its technical equipment.
At the end of the workshop, the participants presented proposals to benefit from previous experiences and plans developed to be a starting base towards implementing projects and achieving sustainable development goals in the drinking water sector in Damascus and its countryside.
