Olaf Scholz:

Russia's war of conquest against Ukraine cannot be justified by anything.

President Putin is leading him with a single goal: to seize Ukraine.

Self-determination and political independence do not count for him.

There is only one word for that.

This is sheer imperialism.

The return of imperialism is not just a disaster for Europe.

This is also a disaster for our global peace order, which is the antithesis of imperialism and neo-colonialism.

That is why it was so important that 141 states unequivocally condemned the Russian war of conquest here in this hall.

Do we watch helplessly as some seek to catapult us back into a world order where war is a common policy tool, where independent nations have to submit to their stronger neighbors or their colonial masters?

Where prosperity and human rights are the privilege of the lucky few?

Or can we join forces to ensure that the multipolar world of the 21st century remains a multilateral world?

My answer as a German and as a European is: We must succeed.

If we want this war to end.

Then we can't care less how it ends.

Putin will only give up his war and imperial ambitions when he realizes he cannot win this war.

Not only is he destroying Ukraine, he is also ruining his own country.

That is why we will not accept any Russian dictated peace, nor any sham referendums.

That is why Ukraine must be able to repel Russia's incursion.

The fact that, with the mediation of Secretary General Guterres and Turkey, grain exports have been made possible again deserves great recognition.

Germany also supports Ukraine in exporting food.

And we will also stand by Ukraine to meet the enormous costs of rebuilding the country.
