A damaged archway, water damage in the gym, preparations for switching to pellet heating and hopefully soon a new boarding school building: all of this is currently occupying the Landschulheim Kempfenhausen.

Kempfenhausen

- The broken archway at the entrance to the Landschulheim Kempfenhausen is the construction site that first catches the eye.

It is supported by an elaborate wooden beam construction, the horizontal cracks on the left and right are clearly visible.

"Another crack goes up through the middle," says headmaster Elmar Beyersdörfer.

"Without the support, there would be a risk that the archway would slip on the sloping terrain." An 18-ton truck that wanted to collect the garbage caused the mishap in July, shortly before the end of the school year.

The Landschulheim Kempfenhausen has even more construction sites, current and future.

The good news: school operations are not affected by the work, according to Beyersdörfer.

It is still unclear when and how the listed brick archway will be repaired.

"Our architect would like to plan it wider and higher," says the headmaster.

So that garbage trucks can get through more easily in the future.

But that is not so easy, because everything has to be coordinated with the monument protection.

"It will take time," Beyersdörfer is clear and adds: "This is a huge problem for us because we only have one access - and it leads through the playground." Pupils, teachers and trucks could only use this one access.

Likewise the garbage trucks.

They would have preferred the way through the archway because it saved them two tight curves.

But an 18-ton truck just can't get through the gate.

"We have often asked for smaller trucks to come to us," reports the director.

But unfortunately without success.

Another construction site is in one of the gyms.

There was water damage there a long time ago, and the summer holidays were not enough to fix it, according to the headmaster.

"It's a complex thing, the screed has to come out."

Earthworks on the school grounds are the harbingers of a change in heating system: "We want to use pellets in the future and need storage space." That makes the most sense in combination with the existing combined heat and power plant.

The whole thing had been planned for a long time, independently of the Ukraine war and the associated energy problems.

Just like the supply of solar energy.

The latter is to be built on a new boarding school building, a major project for the country school home.

"The new building has been approved by the Ministry of Education," says Beyersdörfer, hoping that the project can also be implemented: "In these times, everything is uncertain."

The new building is to be built in place of one of the boarding school buildings, the oldest.

It is necessary because there is no longer enough space for internal students.

Because even the listed Wagner house, in which students currently live, has its deficits.

"There is a lack of fire protection there," says Beyersdörfer.

"The monument protection authority does not allow us to build a second escape route on the outside.

And it's going to be far too expensive inside." That's why the Wagner House can no longer be used as a boarding school in the future.

In addition, the space requirements of the school have grown due to the reintroduction of the nine-year grammar school.

One wants to compensate for both with the planned new building.
