Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu is for the first time considering the possibility of taking a position on the issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine. In his view, Netanyahu is considering calling on Ukraine to open peace talks with Russia, on ending the war.

The possibility of publishing such a call was raised in a poll conducted this morning (Wednesday) by the Likud. The remainder of the question: "Do you agree or disagree that Benjamin Netanyahu will call for a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine and request that Ukraine begin peace negotiations with Russia?".

As I recall, Netanyahu has refrained from speaking out on the issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine since the Russian invasion, which began seven months ago.

In Netanyahu's circles, the positions of the parties are seen in a more balanced way, and they understand the moves of the Russian president, who feels threatened by Ukraine joining NATO, although they do not justify Putin.

This position of Netanyahu is contrary to the line of Prime Minister Yair Lapid, whose approach is quite close to that of the West.

Foreign Minister Lapid Kosher condemned Russia for the invasion of Ukraine several times, and expressed sympathy with the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

As Prime Minister he did not repeat this position, apparently due to the sensitive Israeli interests vis-a-vis Russia.

However, Lapid's principled position is highly critical of the Russian president and the actions his army has taken.
