The first flight will be operated by the Venezuelan state airline, which will not be able to refuel in Bogotá due to US sanctions

Gustavo Petro will attend the reopening of the border with Venezuela on Monday the 26th, according to government sources.

The president has assured his presence on the Simón Bolívar bridge in Cúcuta, in an area closed to the neighboring nation for three years.

So far, Nicolás Maduro has not confirmed his attendance.

In case of doing so, it would be the first time that the two leaders would see each other's faces since they ended the diplomatic blockade that existed between the two countries.

The details of the opening of the border will be discussed tomorrow by two technical commissions in the city of San Antonio, on the Venezuelan side.

There, the agenda and the steps to follow will be specified.

At the moment, according to these same sources, it is known that the first Caracas-Bogotá flight will take place on the 26th, at nine in the morning.

It will be operated by the airline Conviasa.

It is expected to fly on Mondays and Fridays.

Wingo will practice its first flight on October 3.

In the meetings between the officials, they have discussed how to avoid the sanctions that the United States imposed on Conviasa, the Venezuelan state airline.

The main problem is that it could not refuel in Colombia, so the company will have to carry enough fuel for the return trip.

The restrictions prevent any company from doing business with them.

The president, after his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, will witness the opening of the main border crossing, the Simón Bolívar bridge.

Relations had been completely broken since 2019, when Petro's predecessor, Iván Duque, supported the alternative presidency of Juan Guaidó in Venezuela.

Nicolás Maduro expelled all Colombian diplomats and ordered the cessation of any contact with a neighboring country that he now considered an enemy.

The guilds and merchants on both sides have complained these years about the lock on a 2,200-kilometer stretch they share.

Colombia takes a radical turn in its relationship with Venezuela.

The plan to isolate Maduro has not worked, since he continues in power, surely more screwed than ever.

Petro and other regional leaders opt for the path of negotiation to settle the deep political crisis that Venezuela has been experiencing for six years.

The next step now is to return to the dialogue table in Mexico, where Chavismo and the opposition discussed the way to return to democratic normality with general elections supervised by international organizations.

The talks were stopped by the arrest abroad of Álex Saab, whom the US considers Maduro's figurehead.

President Joseph Biden wants the parties to sit down again, although he has the feeling that Maduro has not fulfilled his part.

The US believes that Petro can be a key mediator to convince Chavez's successor and unblock the situation.
