A third of the students report that the corona epidemic has had a negative effect on them emotionally - this is according to the climate survey conducted by the Ministry of Education in schools last year, after a year off due to the virus.

In addition, it was found that in Hebrew education there was a significant decrease in a number of social-emotional indicators compared to previous years, while in Arab society the opposite trend was seen.

Under the direction of Education Minister Yifat Shasha Biton, the ministry also examined for the first time social-emotional skills, difficulty in dealing with stressful situations, the school's efforts to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, independent study skills and the consequences of the corona virus.

It was conducted in 85% of the schools, and along with it a sample survey was conducted that allows you to compare different wordings of questions from the previous times.

The survey shows that the sense of belonging to the school decreased by 10% among Hebrew-speaking students in elementary schools and by 6% in middle schools in high schools, after years of gradual increase.

An increase of 5% was seen in the Arab middle schools.

The index consists of three statements.

About a third of the children answered that they do not feel that school is a pleasant place to be, and about a quarter of them disagreed with the statement that they are good at school or that they feel part of it.

In the questions about the fighting and caring relationships with the teachers, there was a similar decrease in Hebrew-speaking students.

Nearly half of all students said that the teachers do not treat the students equally and discriminate between them, and the answers were also similar regarding the feeling that they can turn to the teachers and that the teachers care about the students.

Another statistic that emerges from the report is that one out of ten students has no one to be with during breaks and no friend they can trust.

About 80% reported that they manage to get along with other students even if they think differently.

About half of the children testified in the questionnaire about inappropriate behavior of students in class - disruptions and lateness to class and rudeness to teachers.

In this regard, an opposite trend was seen between Hebrew and Arabic speakers - in the Hebrew elementary schools there was a significant decrease of 14%, while in the Arab high schools there was an increase of 10%.

19% of elementary students were involved in violent incidents in the month before the survey, compared to 15% of middle school students and 8% in high schools.

43% of the 5th-6th grade students were affected by verbal violence that month, and a third of the middle school students.

One in five elementary school children reported being beaten by another student and 17% of them spread lies or rumors to hurt them.

Verbal violence and urgency were seen at a higher rate among Jews, while boycotts were reported at a 4-fold rate among Arabs.

In general, the incidents of violence were more common among boys than girls.

In the Hebrew elementary schools, a slight increase in violence was seen after several years of decline.

Also, about 70% of the students in all age groups reported that they manage to use social-emotional skills for conflict resolution, emotional regulation and sharing of feelings.

About half find it difficult to deal with pressure in studies and about 40% find it difficult to deal with failures or mistakes.

Most of all, the students reported that the corona virus affected them academically - about half of the middle school and high school students and a third of the elementary school students.

From a social point of view, no significant effect was seen, and in the 5th-6th grades 40% of the students even testified that the epidemic had a positive effect on them.

Education Minister Yifat Shasha Biton said that "the results of the climate survey clearly reflect what the education system felt and still feels, after two difficult years of Corona. Therefore, already last year we invested about half a billion shekels in reducing gaps, most of them emotional and social, in order to deal with The severe consequences. The schools, as educational institutions, also play an important role in shaping and nurturing the emotional and social side of its students, which also directly affect their academic achievements. The findings of the survey, which allow us to target the necessary measures in the system, help us in this task."
