In Freiburg's schools and daycare centers, food will be significantly more expensive in the future.

In addition, there should only be one dish to choose from - namely a vegetarian one.

Freiburg - The food in schools is often not of the best quality.

However, a change is usually not easy - on the one hand, this is due to the fact that there is often a lack of money or the parents of the school children vote against new concepts or proposals.

A proposal in Baden-Württemberg has now caused heated discussions.

In Freiburg, the city administration is not only planning to gradually increase the prices of food in schools and daycare centers, but also to offer only one dish instead of the previous two - a vegetarian one, as

BW24

reports.

Eating in Freiburg schools and day care centers: Vegetarian menus would offer two significant advantages

The school department submitted the proposal to the Freiburg municipal council to adapt the food offer at primary schools and municipal daycare centers from the next school year: the dishes should therefore gradually become more expensive and also only be vegetarian with a high organic content.

Silke Donnermeyer-Weisser, head of the city school board, and Christa Zink, head of the city daycare centers, would welcome this recommendation, as reported by the

Badische Zeitung

.

Because: If only one meal were offered, the quality could be improved on the one hand, but at the same time the price would remain reasonable.

As the

Badische Zeitung

writes, according to a survey by the Parents' Council, parents are largely understanding of the price increase.

But being able to choose from different menus is actually one of the most important demands of parents, along with the desire for better quality.

From the point of view of the Freiburg city administration, however, the two goals can only be reconciled if only one vegetarian dish is offered.

You save money with the caterers, because good quality meat costs more money and you offer an intersection of different diets, they say.

In addition, a reduction to one court would help to reduce the bureaucracy for the city.

Freiburg wants to increase costs for school meals despite savings

Although the city administration in Freiburg would save some costs by reducing the offer, the prices are still to be increased.

A meal currently costs an average of 5.90 euros.

The school department expects the average price to climb to EUR 6.50 in the next school year.

The day-care center food, on the other hand, is significantly cheaper.

According to the school department, it costs an average of 4.53 euros.

Similar rules will soon apply to secondary schools.

But the city administration wants to wait and see what happens at the elementary schools first.

There is a heated discussion on Facebook about the price increase and the vegetarian dish.

"It was just a topic at the parents' evening yesterday.

There is only vegetarian or halal.

I'm running out of words," writes one user.

"School lunches have been a topic for decades - it obviously doesn't get any better," commented another.

"I find that quite intrusive... everyone must still be able to decide for themselves what they would like to eat," is another criticism.

A study also shows that vegetarian diets can often lead to underweight in children.

Others, on the other hand, do not find the idea negative.

"Don't understand the problem, it's super healthy food," or "Great!

Consistently in the right direction”, are the dissenting voices of other users.
