A group of Chinese scientists have developed a face mask that can detect viruses through a 10-minute conversation with an infected person.
According to a study published this week in the journal Matter, a wearable bioelectronic mask designed by researchers from Tongjin University can detect common respiratory viruses including influenza and coronavirus in the air in droplets or mists and then alert the wearer via their mobile device.
The study showed that the new face mask is highly sensitive and is able to measure liquid samples as low as 0.3 microliters and gas samples at ultra-low concentrations of 0.1 femtograms per milliliter.
The designers said they could easily update the wearable to detect new respiratory viruses.
