The West responded to Russia's attack on Ukraine with several sanctions packages, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly described this as the West's "economic blitzkrieg" against Russia.
Now he goes to the next round
At a special meeting on Wednesday, European Union foreign ministers discussed imposing new sanctions on Russia in response to its partial mobilization for the war in Ukraine.
"We will examine new restrictive measures, we will pass them," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told journalists after the meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
However, a final decision must be made at a formal meeting, he added.
Borrell indicated that new sanctions would target both individuals and specific industries.
In a television speech on Wednesday morning, Putin announced the partial mobilization of Russians of military age.
According to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, 300,000 reservists are to reinforce the Russian and separatist forces in southern and eastern Ukraine.
The partial mobilization was sharply criticized by western states.
Borrell and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) will attend a meeting of the UN Security Council on the Ukraine war today.
