When the idea came up in 2016 to erect a replacement building for the dilapidated shelter for the homeless on Martinsweg in the Herrsching commercial area, it all sounded easy, it had to be done very quickly.

It wasn't that easy after all.

Six years later, the new homeless shelter could now be inaugurated.

Herrsching

- Many hurdles had to be overcome, the planning took six years - on Tuesday the new homeless shelter in Herrsching was finally inaugurated in the commercial area.

Herrsching's mayor Christian Schiller recalled the beginnings of the planning, that the previous homeless shelter, the so-called Hurlehaus next to the Christian Morgenstern middle school, had long been dilapidated and was due to make way for a playground extension.

Between 2010 and 2016, repairs were already increasing until the conditions were no longer sustainable.

It was Willi Welte, a CSU councilor at the time, who then brought the new location on the industrial estate into play – which could be implemented quickly in container construction and cost a maximum of 400,000 euros.

Apart from criticism from the neighborhood, from the shepherd dog association and allotment gardeners, the land use planning quickly slowed down the implementation with various reports.

And in the end, the municipal council opted for a solid building, "not a luxury apartment," as Schiller emphasized.

But in accordance with all energy requirements in timber frame construction with eight bedrooms in the one-storey building, which could also be connected with each other for families.

And each with its own bathroom and private entrances from the outside.

“In principle, everyone has their own little apartment here.

Because we don't have a hallway, we also saved a lot of space," explained architect Christoph Welsch.

The house also has a laundry room and a technical room.

The construction costs including earthworks and additional costs amount to 930,000 euros.

A point charge insofar as these were also the costs calculated by Welsch in 2020.

The result is impressive, and the neighbors from the allotment garden and shepherd dog association were also able to see it for themselves in large numbers on Tuesday.

Towards the end - after the land use planning brake and Corona - things actually went "ratzfatz" (Schiller), because construction had only started in February.

The facility is currently designed for up to 16 people, "we hope we don't have to take full advantage of that," said Schiller.

There are currently no people in Herrsching who would have to be accommodated there.

The mayor, proud of being able to provide such a modern functional building, praised the credit for Julia Schmidbauer (head of the social affairs department in the town hall) and the team leader in the residents' registration office, Patricia Göser.

"Other communities will envy us," he said.

Right next door in Seefeld, for example, who has to have her dilapidated accommodation demolished.
