The ax fell, one last time.
On Thursday, Khieu Samphan, the last surviving senior Khmer Rouge leader, was found guilty on appeal of "crimes against humanity", "serious violations of the Geneva Conventions" and "crime of genocide" against Vietnamese.
The Supreme Court, the highest instance of the Extraordinary Chambers within the Cambodian Courts (ECCC) in charge of the Khmer Rouge trials, has thus confirmed all the charges pronounced at first instance, four years ago, and validated life imprisonment sentence.
At 91, Khieu Samphan has exhausted possible remedies in the so-called "002/02" case, opened in 2011. He had already been sentenced to life in prison in 2014 for his role in the evacuation of Phnom Penh in 1975 , and knew that he would end his days in prison, no matter what.
