Opinion Missing a lamp, Netanyahu's mistake Israel today

The day after the war in Ukraine, Israel will be asked where it was • It is not certain that it will have good answers

Ninety people are members of the unofficial WhatsApp group of World Ambassadors to the United Nations.

Not a day goes by without someone in the group coming up with a new idea, how to beat the Russians in the international arena.

Israel, if we can express it that way, is in the group on "quiet situation".

While the Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, spoke at the General Assembly yesterday, the main broadcast of the United Nations actually came from the Security Council, which was discussing the return of peace to Ukraine. The Prime Minister, for his part, did not touch on the subject that the whole world is talking about, and did not repeat in the General Assembly what he said as Foreign Minister.

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine seven months ago, Lapid rightly claimed that "we need to stand on the right side of history."

When the war crimes of the Russian army in Buchach and other places were revealed, he intensified the criticism.

Badin did it.

As human beings in general and as Jews in particular, the Jewish state must be the first to cry out against such atrocities and riots.

But since replacing Bennett, three months ago, Lapid has not taken a public position regarding the war.

Privately he did not change his mind at all.

Publicly, he is afraid to take a position opposite to the one recommended by the security and political system.

moral error

This bending is a moral error and a political omission.

One day the war will end and Israel, like all the countries of the world, will be asked where it was at the moment of truth.

There will be no good answers.

The explanations and excuses, which already do not hold water, will sound even worse at the end of the road.

Because if, for example, fragile Lithuania and Latvia, which share a common border with Putin's Russia, are able to stand up to him, all the more so that the great IDF can. Even so, the chance that while the Russian army is collapsing in the face of the Ukrainian blitz, Putin will decide to confront Israel in Syria is nil .

The fate of the Russian Jews, who have not left the country since the outbreak of the war, is no more difficult than the rest of Russia's citizens.

Putin is many things, but not anti-Semitic.

But even if there are risks, there are moments when a nation must stand up for its values, and yesterday at the UN was such a moment.

Lapid's error is smaller than Netanyahu's.

The former prime minister felt a personal national obligation to Putin, because of significant steps the Russian president took in our favor.

And yet, even good friends sometimes need to be proven wrong.

As the head of the opposition, Netanyahu may enjoy the right to remain silent.

As prime minister, if he returns and is elected, he will have to take a position, and it should be one that the citizens of Israel can be proud of.
