Opinion The killing of the young woman in Iran made the West realize who it was dealing with Israel today

When Iran kills a young woman who did not wear hijab correctly, the West realizes who it is dealing with • And placing an Israeli innovation enterprise where planes hit the beating heart of the USA was only symbolic

The death of Queen Elizabeth also occupied New Yorkers this week.

The flags were lowered to half-mast, the funeral received unprecedented coverage and viewing, and the traffic jams were postponed for a day until the world leaders skipped from London to Manhattan, for the benefit of the annual meeting of the United Nations.

The one who did manage to penetrate through the affairs of the British royal house was the president of Iran Ebrahim Raisi.

As expected, his interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" made headlines for the skepticism he expressed about the existence of the Holocaust.

It was amazing to discover how deep the matter is in the blood of the Iranians, and even more so: how openly they say it, despite the damage that these things cause them.

For years, Israel enjoyed the gift called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - the president who presented to the world every day the face of evil, wickedness and danger inherent in the regime of the Ayatollahs in Tehran.

After him, Iran chose a more pleasant and friendly face (but no less extreme) in the form of Hassan Rouhani, and now it has returned to presenting its true character.

For Israel this is not bad news: Raisi will do an excellent advocacy job for it, above and beyond what it is capable of doing on its own.

This interview and the Holocaust issues were President Raisi's little trouble.

America was furious with him following the death of the young Mehsa Amini, who was arrested by the morality guards in Tehran because she did not wear a hijab properly.

A few days later she died in the hospital because of the damage to her brain as a result of the violence that was used against her.

The Iranians of course provided some kind of lie regarding the cause of Amini's death, and Raisi even said that Amini was like his daughter, but this was another event that made it clear to the world - and especially to the Americans and the innocent administration in Washington - who he was dealing with.

Apparently, these events have no direct effect on what interests Israel in particular - the nuclear agreement.

But they have a great influence on public opinion, which affects the decision-making of the leaders (probably two months before the midterm elections for Congress).

This is part of the explanation for the current rigidity shown by the USA, Great Britain, France and Germany in relation to the demands set by Iran as a condition for returning to the nuclear agreement, primarily the closing of the "open files" on uranium remains found at three sites in Tehran. The powers have already made it clear that they will not agree to this, even at the cost of non-return to the agreement. In Israel they are satisfied, but know that these are decisions that may change. Prime Minister Yair Lapid dealt with this this week in his talks in New York, but his main challenge is to formulate a policy - Israeli, international - regarding what to do in the event that an agreement is not signed, and especially if Iran decides to challenge the world and try to break into the bomb.

want to fly again

Last December I visited New York, and the city was dead.

The streets were empty, and not because of the winter.

The corona virus killed the city.

Many stores were still sealed off, with wooden boards covering the shop windows to prevent looting.

The restaurants were half empty, and everyone walked around wearing masks: in the subway, in the theater, even on the street.

All this no longer exists.

New York is bustling with life - the streets are busy, the shops are full of customers, it's hard to find a place in the restaurants.

It is true that it was the week of the UN assembly, and still - the return to normality is felt in every corner. There is nothing to talk about masks anymore (except in the theater, where they are still strict; but at Eric Clapton's concert this week at Madison Square Garden there was an audience of thousands without a single medical mask ), and the corona is a distant rumor (although there are still free testing stations on every street corner that no one visits).

But those who are looking for the damages of the corona, will find them elsewhere.

When you enter the big drugstore chains, you find that almost everything is locked.

It used to be that only the expensive products, like razors, were locked up;

Today they also sell toothpastes for three dollars, and in some places even chocolates.

The corona, it turns out, has left many people on the sidelines, and they are looking for a way to survive.

The stores are forced to defend themselves, and the result is locks and protections on every possible product, and also many more security personnel walking around the stores.

And yet, it seems that America is looking to live again after the closures and restrictions.

To shake off the last two years, and not only them.

Everyone now wants to be Florida, which even at the peak of the Corona virus continued to live as usual, and because of this enjoys an unprecedented economic boom.

The Israelis fit into this atmosphere naturally.

You can hear Hebrew in every corner, but apart from tourists there is also quite a bit of business buzz in the air.

Arel Margalit was here last week with his start-up City, and this week the center of the "Squadron" - a first-of-its-kind simulator farm for F-35 aircraft - was opened in the city.

The beautiful face of Israel

Kobi Regev is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves.

A fighter pilot, who previously commanded two F-16 squadrons, and in his last position was the IDF attaché in Rome. When he retired, he founded, together with his wife, Adamit, a venture called "The Squadron" in Cinema City in Gilil, which allows a unique experience of flying even for those who are not a pilot

The real advantage of the squadron is the camaraderie.

Managements and boards arrive, put on flight suits, go through a briefing - and go on a joint operational sortie.

When they finish, they go through a debriefing, and this whole process allows them to improve their professional teamwork, in the best tradition of Air Force excellence.

This week Regev opened the squadron's New York branch.

Unlike the center in Israel, which also allows citizens to come and fly, in New York it is a center of leadership and excellence for companies only.

It is located on the tenth floor of tower number 7 in the World Trade Center, a few meters from where the twin towers stood until 2001.

There is quite a bit of symbolism in the fact that an Israeli pilot comes with an innovative venture to a place where planes hit the beating heart of the USA. This shows the strength of Israel, its creativity and innovation, and the willingness of the USA and the New York (business, Jewish) community to embrace her.

Regev's venture is indeed a business one, but he sees himself as an Israeli ambassador.

He is still in reserve, and is convinced that the squadron will help reveal the beautiful face of Israel to the world.

Those who arrive at the New York branch will meet Israeli simulator instructors, who were released from the IDF and came here to help establish the new project. It is likely that in the future most of the staff will be American, but for now it is almost entirely blue and white - including several senior officers (resp.) who have an impressive record in the IDF The Israeli air.

The outgoing air force commander, Amikam Norkin, also arrived this week for the launch of Regev's project.

The two shared the same tent at the pilot course, and have been friends ever since.

Norkin spoke at the opening event and talked about the excellence of the Air Force.

Although he did not share operational details with his listeners, he left the feeling that those who touch the simulators, will be able to get the closest to the Air Force pilots - who operate all over the Middle East and beyond to preserve the strategic advantage of the State of Israel.
