The Oktoberfest in Munich does not seem to be affected by the current energy saving measures - to the annoyance of many citizens.

Some of them vented their displeasure on Twitter.

Munich – More than half a year ago, Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, began its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.

Its consequences have long since reached Germany.

Citizens and companies are encouraged to save energy.

Only the Wiesn seems to be exempt from the requirements, some are annoyed.

Oktoberfest 2022: full lighting despite energy saving regulations?

Germany's supermarkets turn down the heating, keep the doors closed if possible and also call on their customers to consciously save energy when shopping.

With these measures, they follow the instructions of the Energy Saving Ordinance of September 1st.

Private households should also be part of the solution – the federal and state governments keep publishing tips for saving energy at home.

As everyone as possible should take part, many people are currently accepting restrictions in order to save energy.

Energy saving crisis - not at the Oktoberfest?

Only the Oktoberfest does not seem to be affected by the current austerity measures.

The Ferris wheel, booths and marquee lights shine in Munich's night sky until late at night.

Many people wonder why the world's largest folk festival seems to be exempt from the energy-saving directive.

In just under two weeks, the Wiesn consumes about as much energy as an entire small town: three million kilowatt hours of electricity were consumed during the 2019 Oktoberfest.

"That corresponds to the annual requirement of 1,200 households or 15 percent of Munich's daily requirement," explained Stadtwerke München.

"Out of solidarity": Twitter users call for Wiesn energy-saving measures

Numerous users have now vented their anger on Twitter: In view of the fact that street lighting is switched off in the evening, swimming pools are cooled down and saunas are closed, the bright lighting on the Theresienwiese seems like a slap in the face to many.

One user therefore demanded: "Out of solidarity, there should be no more lights at the Oktoberfest." Another formulated it even more drastically and demanded: "Turn the lights off at the Oktoberfest." The city of Munich had already announced the first austerity measures in July: you want to do without the lighting of historical buildings completely, dim street lamps and switch off traffic lights and fountains that are not required.
