Soon 520 new places for asylum seekers: District reacts to increasing refugee numbers

The district is preparing for the expected increase in the number of asylum seekers in the coming months.

A total of six larger accommodations with 520 places are currently "in progressive planning", said the district office on request.

District – After the large number of refugees in 2015 and 2016, the topic of asylum seekers was no longer a top priority in the district and in the cities and municipalities – with the exception of the Ukraine refugees, of course.

The accommodations created at that time were easily sufficient, as of this week 180 of the 1738 places were still free.

But that is likely to change soon.

Because the number of refugees is increasing noticeably.

Already in the first half of the year there were 406,000 asylum applications across the EU, an increase of a whopping 68 percent compared to the previous year.

By August, more than 115,000 initial applications for asylum had been made in Germany.

And the numbers have not decreased.

If anything, even more, often illegal, border crossings are registered, including on the Balkan route.

That is why the municipal umbrella organizations in Bavaria have already called for a refugee summit at the federal level so that gymnasiums and tents do not have to be used as accommodation again.

Privately accommodated Ukrainians must leave their homes by March 31

Although the situation in the district is still relaxed - according to the district office, only 118 asylum seekers have arrived since the beginning of the year - it is likely to become more explosive there as well.

Because many of the 1,330 Ukrainians who were taken in have found shelter in private apartments.

But they have to leave there by March 31st at the latest.

"This was taken into account from the outset and communicated by the majority of landlords when acquiring rental properties," says Deputy District Office Spokesman Klaus Mergel.

In addition, there is the still impressive number of incorrect deposits.

This is what refugees are called who have a permanent or at least longer right of residence in Germany.

But because they often cannot find an apartment, they are allowed to stay longer in their usual accommodation.

After all, there are currently 167 such incorrect documents in the district, across all possible nations.

"Some of them have been living there since 2017," says Mergel.

He promises that no one has ever had to be thrown out of a shelter and will not do so in the future either.

To keep things that way without any problems, a whole series of new accommodation for asylum seekers is being built.

"A total of six larger properties with around 520 spaces are in progressive planning," says Mergel, which means that some of them should be ready for occupancy in early summer 2023.

As reported, accommodation in Peiting is known to offer space for up to 144 refugees and which was recently approved by the municipal council.

Also on the Leprosenweg in Weilheim, the existing worn-out containers are to be replaced by a new building.

Mergel did not want to say anything about other projects, not even about existing homes.

Only so much: There are accommodations of a significant size in Weilheim, Schongau, Peiting, Penzberg, Rottenbuch, Altenstadt and Steingaden.
