Annalena Baerbock is impressed by the people demonstrating in Russia against the partial mobilization ordered by ruler Vladimir Putin.
After Putin's announcements, it was now clear to everyone in Russia: "Russia is at war with its neighbors and it will affect everyone in Russia," said the Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to the civil rights portal OVD-Info, more than 1,300 people have been arrested during protests against partial mobilization in Russia.
In Moscow, people shouted »No to war!« or called for »Russia without Putin«.
Photos and videos showed how police officers violently seized the demonstrators and dragged them onto buses.
The courage of the people in Ukraine to fight for peace and freedom every day must be supported "with humanitarian aid, with civil aid, with (a) package of measures for the winter for reconstruction, but also with arms deliveries," said Baerbock.
Baerbock did not comment on a possible delivery of western battle tanks - a politically extremely controversial issue.
At the Security Council meeting, they would "make it clear that we do not accept this attack on Ukraine and the attack on the peace order in Europe and the United Nations Charter".
The fact that Ukraine donated 50,000 tons of grain to Ethiopia and Somalia shows “that Ukraine also stands up for international law and fights”.
The donation means that 1.6 million people in the Horn of Africa would have at least a secure bread supply for a month.
Guterres: Russian annexations would violate international law
At the special session of the Security Council on the war in Ukraine, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russia-backed sham referendums in several areas of eastern Ukraine as a possible violation of international law.
"Any annexation of the territory of a state by another state by threat or use of force is a violation of the UN Charter and international law," Guterres said.
At the same time, he alluded to Vladimir Putin's thinly veiled threats: "The idea of a nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, has become a topic of discussion." This is unacceptable.
