Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro maintained on Friday that he could win the presidential election in the first round on October 2, despite polls showing a dynamic in favor of his main rival, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva.
"We are in the majority, we will win in the first round,"
exclaimed the head of state during a meeting in Divinopolis, in the state of Minas Gerais (southeast).
According to the latest survey by the benchmark institute Datafolha released on Thursday, the lead of Lula, the former left-wing president (2003-2010), over Bolsonaro has increased from 12 to 14 points.
The far-right president remains stuck at 33% of voting intentions while Lula is credited with 47%.
If we take into account the votes cast (not counting nulls or whites), Lula is acclaimed by 50% of people questioned by Datafolha, the minimum percentage to win in the first round.
This
“gives favorable conditions for a victory in the first round”
for the former turner-miller, Adriano Laureno, political analyst at the consulting firm Prospectiva, told AFP.
According to experts, the most likely scenario remains a return to the polls for a second round on October 30.
Jair Bolsonaro, who has constantly questioned the reliability of the polls, harangued the crowd who came to see him at Divinopolis: “there is no election without people in the street”.
"No one will see any of the other candidates having a rally that even comes close to 10% of the people who are here
," he said.
According to Datafolha, in the event of a second round, Lula would win with 54% of the votes against 38% for Bolsonaro.
