In six weeks, citizens and companies must have submitted their property tax returns.

Associations are now sounding the alarm and demanding a new deadline.

Frankfurt – By October 31, around 36 million properties will have to be revalued using owner information.

Citizens and companies must submit their property tax returns by then.

Several large associations and the German Tax Union are now demanding that Finance Minister Lindner extend the deadline beyond October 31.

The period should be extended to 2023, but at least to December 31, 2022, reports the

Handelsblatt

.

The tax union and the Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors are now also warning of chaos if the previous deadline of October 31 is adhered to.

There is even talk of a “collapse of the tax offices”.

The Federal Ministry of Finance rejects the extension of the deadline for property tax returns

Nevertheless, the Federal Ministry of Finance rejected an extension of the deadline for the property tax return on Wednesday (September 21), reports

WirtschaftsWoche

.

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Finance announced that an "extension of the submission deadline beyond individual cases" was "not planned".

In principle, however, the federal states could grant a postponement.

Extension of the deadline for property tax returns: "Avoidable bureaucratic burden"

In a letter from the Mittelstand working group to the finance ministers of the federal and state governments, the

Handelsblatt

reported that the corona and energy crises had drained the substance of many companies.

In the currently extremely challenging situation, any additional and avoidable bureaucratic burden must urgently be avoided.

The deadline extension must now come quickly.

Florian Kölbler, Chairman of the German Tax Union

The working group went on to say that it would be incomprehensible that it would be necessary to “submit a very complex property tax value declaration” by the said date.

Deadline for property tax returns is about to expire: what documents do you need?

Which documents you need depends on the state in which the property is located.

Because not all federal states follow the so-called federal model: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hamburg, Hesse and Lower Saxony have opted for a different procedure.

Therefore, it is best to get information on the website of the tax authorities of the respective federal state.

According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, the following documents in particular are required for properties in the eleven federal states that have joined the federal model:

  • size of the property

  • Land register page number (if available), district, corridor, parcel

  • For condominiums: co-ownership share in the property

  • Tax number/file number of the property

  • ground value

  • Exact year of construction of the building (from a year of construction 1949)

  • living space

  • Number of garage parking spaces

  • Contact details of the owners and their shares in the property

Tax union demands extension of deadline for property tax returns

Meanwhile, the tax union and the Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors are warning of chaos if the deadline for property tax returns continues to end on October 31.

The tax offices are already suffering from a lack of staff, according to the chairman of the German Tax Union, Florian Kölbler.

“The extension of the deadline must now come quickly.

Otherwise, the tax offices are in danger of collapsing under the deadline extension requests,” says Kölbler.
