Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Miqdad, discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, a number of issues of common interest.
The two ministers stressed that the relations between the two friendly countries are strategic and historical, stressing the determination of the two sides to move forward in developing them in various fields.
The meeting dealt with developments on the international arena and in the region, where views were agreed on the importance of continuing to push towards building a multipolar world order based on the rules of international law and the provisions of the United Nations Charter away from the mentality of Western and unipolar hegemony.
In this context, Minister Miqdad reiterated Syria's support for the Russian special military operation and Russia's right to defend itself in the face of threats and aggressive Western policies.
The meeting also dealt with a number of aspects related to the situation in Syria, where Lavrov expressed his country's continued provision of various forms of support to Syria to preserve its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, combat terrorism and confront unilateral coercive measures that negatively affected the lives of Syrians.
The two ministers pointed to the importance of the Astana process and the need for continued coordination on the various issues on its agenda. They also stressed the need for Western countries not to obstruct the implementation of early recovery projects in Syria stipulated in the Security Council resolution, and for donor countries to fulfill their obligations in this field.
