Three more "mega stores" are opening on Munich's Kaufingerstrasse.

But the local dealers are not all enthusiastic about the development.

Munich - If you had to locate the shopping heart of the city in a single street, many Munich residents would probably name Kaufingerstrasse.

The pedestrian zone, which is also celebrating its 50th birthday this year, has changed a lot in recent years.

Soon something new will be created on the promenade, surrounded by the town hall, Frauenkirche and Stachus.

Among other things, two mega stores are moving in.

Not all local entrepreneurs are happy about the overall development.

Munich: Entrepreneurs dissatisfied with development - "All inner cities look the same"

“More and more chains are opening.

All city centers look the same,” complains Oliver Busch, Hut Breiter branch manager.

There are only a few owner-managed shops in the pedestrian zone at Marienplatz.

The family company Hut Breiter has been one of them for more than 100 years.

Veicht cigars, a little further towards Stachus, have always been there in Munich.

To be more precise, since 1916, as the owner Alfons Detsch explains.

He is still struggling with the consequences of the corona pandemic.

“Sales have fallen sharply.

It can't get any worse." At the same time, a large number of large construction sites were coming to Kaufingerstrasse, which meant that the pedestrian zone had become less attractive for customers.

Meanwhile, the CSU and Free Voters are calling for more Sunday shopping in Munich and new rules for the sale of goods

Munich's pedestrian zone: These shops come to Kaufingerstrasse

Work is currently going on in many places - mostly behind colorful advertising facades that announce what will soon be available for purchase there.

Coming from Marienplatz, the showroom of an electric car provider opens.

Fisker Ocean then advertises its cars to the people of Munich on Kaufingerstrasse – “Designed in California.

Made in Austria".

From Thursday next week, knight's castles, roller coasters or Diagon Alley from the novel "Harry Potter" will be enthroned on the shelves in the shop opposite.

The largest Lego store in Germany is opening at Kaufinger Tor.

In the future, Lego fans will be able to shop on 881 square meters.

Another mega shop is not yet visible from the outside, but plans are already underway.

At Kaufingerstraße 22, where Esprit and New Yorker used to be based, Germany's largest H&M is to be built.

The fashion chain plans to sell its products on a total area of 4,500 square meters from the middle of next year.

The country's largest H&M is also in the starting blocks.

Positive aspects: "enrichment" and vacant branches

Wolfgang Fischer, the chairman of the City Partner Munich association, sees the developments in the pedestrian zone as positive.

The Lego store is "a great asset" for Munich.

Precisely because the shop attracts visitors because of its dimensions.

At the same time, no regional company had to move out for the building block paradise.

The new giant H&M also makes Fischer confident.

The fashion chain is merging all of its smaller branches on Kaufingerstraße in the mega branch.

This would free up smaller areas for new retailers.

Because seeing the same company logo every 100 meters – no city wants that for its shopping heart.
