Sentences of up to 12 years in prison were pronounced Friday, September 23 on appeal, against five men tried for beating to death the young Dorian Guéméné, 24, outside a nightclub in Rennes in 2018.

The five accused were retried on appeal for fatal blows, before the Assize Court of Appeal of Saint-Brieuc since September 12.

After more than eight hours of deliberation, the Assize Court of Appeal chose not to follow the submissions of the Advocate General.

The latter had requested sentences ranging from 5 years' imprisonment to 16 years' imprisonment.

In its verdict, the court lowered the sentences handed down at first instance.

The Ille-et-Vilaine Assize Court in Rennes had sentenced the five defendants to terms of 8 years' imprisonment up to 15 years' imprisonment, in October 2021. Twelve years' imprisonment was pronounced on the against the main defendant Sacha R., who admitted having struck the victim 7 or 8 times.

His brother Stanislas R. was sentenced to three years in prison, one of which was suspended.

At first instance, he was sentenced to 8 years.

Having already served his sentence, he emerged free.

A third defendant was sentenced to 6 years compared to 10 years at the first trial.

Two other defendants sentenced in Rennes to 10 and 13 years' imprisonment were sentenced on appeal to 5 years' imprisonment, one of which was suspended.

On July 7, 2018 in the early morning, after a verbal altercation, the respondents were asked to leave the establishment.

The victim and one of his friends had in turn left the nightclub 15 minutes later through an exit reserved for staff.

Lying bloodied on a sidewalk, Dorian Guéméné had received numerous blows to the face.

His friend, also stricken, managed to call for help, but Dorian died of his injuries.

The autopsy had revealed a “

predominant facial crash on the left

” with “

brain trauma

” and “

cerebral edema

”.
