Work begins on Monday and will last until autumn 2023: the Loisach-Isar Canal near Eurasburg will be renovated.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – The Loisach-Isar canal needs a general overhaul.

The work will start next Monday, September 26th, and will last until autumn next year.

This also involves the blocking of access and crossings.

For ten million euros: the Loisach-Isar Canal is being renovated by Uniper

According to information from Uniper Kraftwerke GmbH, which operates the canal, the need for rehabilitation was identified as early as 2019.

At that time, immediate structural measures and sealing were used to react to isolated leakages of seepage water.

The water supply was also limited to half of the normal capacity.

Now nails with heads are to be made.

The canal is ten kilometers long and was put into operation together with the Walchensee power plant in 1924.

It was intended to relieve the Loisach from Beuerberg, since the power plant would allow additional water from the Isar to enter the Kochelsee and thus the Loisach.

"It also serves as flood protection for the region," explains Uniper.

In an emergency, up to 35 cubic meters of water per second are diverted past Wolfratshausen.

The renovation measures will cost around ten million euros.

The main measure is to dredge a three-kilometre stretch near Eurasburg – and seal the entire canal cross-section over a one-kilometre stretch.

According to the press release, geotextile clay sealing sheets are used for this purpose.

"They consist of two layers of non-rotting fabric, with a highly swellable clay mineral in between." This means that minor unevenness in the subsurface can also be sealed.

But that's not all: The dams are to be raised in the area in question and in a short section north of Eurasburg up to the "Loisach approach" near Gelting.

In order to be able to regularly check the five culvert structures, the maintenance routes are being created or expanded, mainly on the right-hand side of the dam.

"Of course, in addition to the intake structure near Beuerberg, all five culvert structures will also be selectively renovated."

According to Uniper, talks have already taken place with the municipality of Eurasburg and the city of Geretsried as well as the Tölz district office and the Weilheim water management office.

Road closures affect the riverside paths on the right and left of the Loisach-Isar Canal between Baierlach near Eurasburg and the Geltinger brickworks, as well as all access roads to this section of the dam.

The closure also affects the cycle paths on the western bank.

"It is recommended to use the official cycle path connection from Gelting from the Loisachbrücke at the end of the Bahnhofstraße to Eurasburg west of the Loisach." Exceptions apply to residents, the rescue services, suppliers and waste disposal companies.

Theodoros Reumüssel, press spokesman for hydroelectric power, urgently asks that the closures be adhered to: "Here is construction site traffic - which is always dangerous."
