Baden-Württemberg's green head of government, Winfried Kretschmann, is pushing for the introduction of a solar obligation for older buildings as well.
"Every suitable house in the country should be a small solar power plant," said Kretschmann on Saturday at the Green party conference in Donaueschingen.
He hopes that the green-black coalition will be ready next year to decide on the general obligation.
Donaueschingen - He knows that this does not happen overnight - also because the crisis is putting a heavy financial burden on many households.
But by 2035 this is feasible and reasonable.
In the most recent negotiations on the climate protection law, this obligation was initially excluded under pressure from the CDU.
Kretschmann referred to the potential of mandatory solar roofs.
If all suitable roofs were equipped with a photovoltaic system, 60 terawatt hours of electricity could be generated.
That corresponds to the annual output of more than five nuclear power plants.
This could supply 17 million households, which is three times more than Baden-Württemberg.
There are many concerns about such an extension of the obligation - so far, a solar system has to be installed in new buildings and in the case of fundamental roof renovations.
Kretschmann said: "We need less prevention culture and more enabling culture." dpa
