The activities of the first national conference on food quality and safety, which was organized by the Syrian Scientific Society for Quality in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and the Center for Business Excellence, focused on ways to improve the quality of food industries and the prospects for their development in Syria.

In a speech during the opening of the conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Damascus, Minister of Industry Ziad Sabbagh pointed to the need to expand the application of quality standards in agricultural and food manufacturing facilities to develop this sector, increase the competitiveness of its products, improve manufacturing efficiency and meet the needs of citizens.

Minister Sabbagh pointed to the importance of cooperation between producers, traders, industrialists and relevant government agencies to ensure quality in all chains of food production, processing, storage and distribution through the establishment and operation of food control systems, noting that during the past two decades a number of agricultural and food industries facilities in Syria have obtained quality certificates.

For his part, the head of the Syrian Scientific Society for Quality Waseem Al-Ghabra pointed to the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors and the civil society to spread the culture of quality, qualification and training on standard specifications and updating them in order to achieve the growth of the productive and service sectors and the prosperity of the economy.

The Director of the Center for Business Excellence, Engineer Esraa Hamdan, noted the importance of working to consolidate the basic principles of quality in a manner based on science and modern technologies, in order to return the Syrian industry to global competition, calling for continuing to work on setting the right controls and concerted efforts and keeping pace with international standards to produce leading food products in the world.

Member of the Board of Directors of the Damascus and Rural Chamber of Industry and head of the food sector in the Chamber, Talal Qala Ji, considered that the conference constitutes a qualitative leap in promoting the culture of quality and safety of Syrian food products and their compliance with international standards to improve their exports and expand their markets, which currently exceed 120 countries despite the economic siege imposed on the country.

For his part, Hossam Makki, a member of the Chamber of Industry in Damascus and its countryside, stated that food quality and safety is a consumer's right, calling for the formation of a body concerned with food safety and strengthening the culture of food security among citizens to be a national culture that supports and enhances the presence of the Syrian product in global markets.

The conference activities included three sessions, the topics of which dealt with technical regulations and food standard specifications and their role in food quality control, safety management system, quality of manufacturing machines and standards of relevant international organizations, in addition to the health and economic dimensions of food manufacturing through presentations on the use of laser technologies to detect fraud in food and presentation of the experiences of a number of Companies in implementing quality management systems and ensuring food safety.

Representatives from the Center for Scientific Studies and Research, Damascus University, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO", the Technical Institute for Laser Research, the General Authority for Biotechnology, the Syrian Arab Standards and Metrology Organization, the Syrian Chemical Society, and representatives of a number of private food industry companies participated in the conference.
