Fridays For Future activists called for a global climate strike on Friday.

Thousands of people followed the call in Munich to protest together.

Munich – They are back on the streets: After the hot summer, global droughts and floods, the activists from

Fridays for Future

reported back to the global climate strike in front of Königsplatz yesterday.

According to the police, 6,000 people in Munich followed the call to protest.

Fridays for Future itself spoke of 10,000 participants.

A long protest procession formed on Brienner Strasse between Königsplatz and Augustenstrasse.

After a few speeches, the strikers then moved on towards Odeonsplatz and Ludwigstrasse.

Schoolchildren and young people also took to the streets in other Bavarian cities.

It is the big comeback of the climate fighters.

Since the outbreak of Corona, the movement has almost seemed to have fallen asleep.

In March this year, the climate activists in Munich attracted attention with a large poster campaign on Königsplatz. There was also a major protest in Munich for the G7 summit, but in between it was relatively quiet.

But how do the activists themselves see it?

"The impression is deceptive.

The entire climate movement is loud and strong, and we will remain so until we reach our goals,” says activist Elisabeth B. (16).

The Fridays for Future movement still takes to the streets in Munich at least every first Friday of the month.

Only: She thinks that public interest in the demos has declined due to war, inflation and the energy crisis.

That is why climate activist Luisa Neubauer also sharply criticizes Chancellor Scholz and the traffic light coalition.

Climate strike in Munich: "We must not put the climate on the back burner"

This is also reflected in the fact that not as many people can be mobilized as before the pandemic, even for global strikes like yesterday: In September 2019, around 40,000 people demonstrated with Fridays for Future in Munich - yesterday's action was still one of these numbers far away.

Nevertheless, it is important right now not to lose sight of climate change, says FFF spokeswoman Ronja Hofmann (19): "We must not play the crises off against each other - and put the climate at the back." They also wanted to set an example yesterday .

Specifically, the movement is demanding, among other things, a special fund of 100 billion euros from the federal government for more climate protection.

For this goal, Fridays for Future wants to continue taking to the streets in Munich.

Hofmann says: “We are on strike until you act.

We remain true to that!”
