Several rare stamps were sold at an auction in Wiesbaden.

A buyer got hold of "The Super Units" for 290,000 euros.

Wiesbaden/Oldenburg/Hamburg – A buyer bought stamps known as “The Super Units” from the Oldenburg collection area on Saturday (September 24) for 290,000 euros.

The rare stamps started at the auction with 250,000 euros.

A buyer from the hall was awarded the contract, according to a spokeswoman for the Heinrich Koehler auction house in Wiesbaden.

She described the purchase price as "sensational".

"The Super Units" comprise the complete stamp issue of 1861 in undivided units of six stamps each.

According to the auction house, Oldenburg had postal sovereignty over its own area at the time.

Own postage stamps were also issued - in very small editions.

Auction in Wiesbaden: business letter auctioned for 180,000 euros

A valuable business letter with 9 shilling stamps, which went from Hamburg to New York via Liverpool in 1859, was also auctioned on Saturday - it changed hands for 180,000 euros.

The letter with a starting bid of 60,000 euros was bought by a buyer on the phone, the auction house said.

The letter carries the largest known number of 9-shilling stamps from 1859, auction house managing director Dietrich Michelson said ahead of the auction.

"It's a beautiful cover with the blue background, the red stamps and the four yellow stamps." According to the auction house, it was 16 days on the road at the time.

The stamps are part of the eighth stamp auction of the collection of former Tengelmann boss Erivan Haub.

The Haub collection has been auctioned since the summer of 2019.
