Authorities had already pronounced her dead when the 72-year-old Indian surprised her family.

It is unclear who was actually buried.

Guduvanchery - Both the 72-year-old Indian woman and her entire family probably couldn't believe their eyes when the lady showed up alive and well for her own funeral service on Thursday.

The daily newspapers Times of India

and

New Indian Express

report

that the body that was actually buried is the subject of ongoing investigations .

The events resemble "scenes from a Bollywood film", as the

New Indian Express

writes.

Chandra S. has been living with her eldest son Vadivelu in southeastern India (state of Tamil Nadu) since the death of her husband.

According to the police report, the 72-year-old often suffers from depression and in this condition she has been visiting a temple about 22 kilometers from her home for years.

Such a situation also existed on Monday, September 19.

So Chandra S. packed a small suitcase, told her family and set off, the Indian newspaper said.

On the way itself, she then decided to visit other places of worship.

Because she still hadn't returned a day later, the family had filed a missing persons report.

Relatives told the 48-year-old son that same evening that an elderly woman had been hit by a train and killed nearby, according to the

Times of India

.

He then contacted the responsible police, who asked him if they could identify the victim in the Guduvanchery morgue.

And indeed: the face of the dead had been distorted beyond recognition by the accident, but the traditional Indian clothing was sufficient clue for the son.

"Because her sari was similar to his mother's, he identified her as his mother," a police spokesman said.

A newborn in India, however, was far worse off and was buried alive.

Indian woman appears at her own funeral service - identification of the dead is ongoing

After the alleged identification, the corpse was handed over to the family so that they could be buried.

Said and done.

The dead were buried on Wednesday, and the family came together again on Thursday morning to perform a special mourning rite - a form of puja.

But not only the relatives appeared on this occasion, Chandra S. is said to have returned home after three days during this funeral service.

On the way home, to her amazement, she saw pictures of herself and texts that declared her dead and lined the way to her house.

The body that the family buried a day earlier has now been exhumed, according to Indian authorities.

Attempts are now being made to clarify the identity of the dead.

In India itself, however, reports of the "tomato flu" are also causing a stir at the moment.
